Thoroughbred Park to Host Jericho Cup Lead Up

The Canberra Racing Club are pleased to announce the Club will be holding a lead up race to the Jericho Cup called the Road to Jericho on Sunday 17 November at Thoroughbred Park. The $25,000 Road to Jericho, held over 3400m, will be a guaranteed start race for the Jericho Cup held at Warrambool, Victoria on December 1st. The Jericho Cup is a Benchmark 90 worth $300,000 and is run over a grueling 4600m.

The concept commemorates a magnificent story relating to the ANZACs. nearing the end of the first world war. The Australian Light Horse were planning a major offensive against the Turkish enemy. As a diversion, a race meeting was organized for the eve of the assault. The feature on this makeshift meeting was the Jericho Cup which was won by the literal warhorse Bill The Barstard. The race is now held annually since its inception in 2018 which commemorated the 100th anniversary.

“The Club is excited to work with Racing Victoria and The Managing Director of the Jericho Cup, Bill Gibbins. Canberra being the home of the Australian War Memorial is the ideal location to partner into this concept to honour the Australian Light Horseman” Canberra Racing Club CEO Andrew Clark.

Gibbins congratulated the Canberra Racing Club for their decisive action to bring this event to reality.
