Racing & Sports Canberra Racing Review — 24 August 2021

They raced at Queanbeyan, and the surface played fair despite the heavy 8 conditions. There were some nice performances from some promising types. Team Joseph-Jones trained an early double with Jordan Mallyon on both.

Race 1 (1460m) MDN

Roughie BURNT PATCH $16 upset the apple cart in the first knocking off the $3.1 favourite MORE EXCITEMENT. He kicked off a running double for Team Joseph-Jones. He tailed the field on the rail and after turning for home worked over to the middle of the track. He really dug deep and got to More Excitement right on the line. The latter railed just ahead of the above after a slow off. He turned second and was the one you wanted to be on before the winner arrived on the scene. DISCO QUEEN $4.80 sat midfield and was four-wide as they straightened. She looked a chance at the 200m but lacked a killer punch and just pipped the leader GALDOCINE $61 out of third. He fought well and only gave it away at the 100m. EPIZEEL (2) $3.30 disappointed but was obliged to race three-wide from the 1200m. Burnt Patch was coming off a 28-week break and turned the form around. More Excitement is ready to win.

Race 2 (1600m) CL1

ICONICALLY drifted to start $7.50 but delivered the double for Team Joseph-Jones with an all-the-way win. He made the lead comfortably and set a good gallop before slowing them up approaching the 1000m. He was clicked up as they swung in and was three lengths in front at the 200m and the chasers didn’t get close. Runner up JUST ROMAN CANDLE $5 had every chance. She was eased to sit behind the leader and was perfectly placed to run him down.  LA VALKYRIE $3.60F raced midfield and at the 600m became awkwardly positioned and had to be eased. She came down the middle but has too much to do. POETIC POWER $4.20 was parked on the winner throughout but lacked his dash. A good ride and a good win by Iconically. He won the Maiden easily three-back and built on that.

Race 3 (1000m) MDN

On paper STRATUM PRIDE $3.80 and LOOSE LOVE $6 looked the ones to beat but the money came for ANTONIO $3.20F and he let supporters down. Loose Love took it out by a lip, and it was an impressive effort. He began awkwardly and settled near the back of the field. The seas parted on turning and he slinged through down the middle of the track. He has lengths to make up at the 200m and powered home to get up on the line. Stratum Pride was just nutted.  She sat a touch wide in the leading division and was well positioned as they swung for home. She also finished determinedly. ACCRUE $8.50 sat outside the leader and looked the all-over winner at the 100m when he got the better of him. The finish dash of the other pair proved too potent. Antonio crossed over and led and only gave it way late. He was first-up off a 28-week break and his trial had suggested he would go well. All four placegetters can be followed with Loose Love getting the gold star.

Race 4 (2000m) BM65

ZOUNIQUE $1.85 raced favourite but the money came for SAME OLD SCENE $3.80, and he proved too good for the former. She was eased to settle back in the field and was last with a wall in front of him as they turned into the stretch. The gaps opened and he gradually made ground before powering through to win by 1.5L. A tip top ride by Kayla Nesbit. Zounique sat one off the rail at the tail of the field after being momentarily tightened passing the winning post on the first occasion.  He was ridden forward after the 800m and was third, three-wide on the turn.  He tried hard and did a good job to hold off the finishers. There was plenty of merit in GEORGE TWO’s third placing beaten 1.7L at 60-1. He was three-wide with no cover down the back and then pushed forward and found a reasonable spot. He turned wide and was dogged to the line. HELLO CHINA $6.50 also finished it off. PRIDE OF KALARU $6.50 raced on the pace and gave nothing. The co-trainer said he pulled up with a slightly poor recovery rate and that the gelding would continue onto the Acton on 3 September.

Race 5 (1200m) MDN

An absolute blowout with THE BENT ELBOWS getting-up by a lip at 90-1. He made sharp improvement off the plain debut effort on the synthetic. The hot favourite PANDERING (8) was well-beaten but was squeezed out badly at the start and couldn’t get into it after. Forget the run. The leader Paver Miner flew in front and then ran off coming to the home turn. The winner settled back in the field and was behind a bunch of them as they swung for home. He had to be checked at the 150 and was then driven back to the rail. In clear air he zoomed home to win in the last stride. The local HERE COMES KERMIT had good support starting at $7.50. From the rail she chased the leader and found herself in-front heading for the turn. She railed strongly and had it won everywhere but the line.  SUNSOUTGUNSOUT $4.20 joined the above in the chase behind the tearaway leader. The former Tasmanian tried hard but just lacked the late dash beaten 1.7L. Fourth placed EIGHT WILLOWS 60-1 was just behind and the improved run would have pleased connections. In the circumstances, it was an excellent win by The Bent Elbows.

Race 6 (1200m) CL1

Along with Pandering in the previous, MISS MANZANILLA $2.70 looked the other of the better chances on the day and duly saluted. She sat one off the rail behind the leader. She angled wide on turning and put the nose in front at the 200m. She was a tough green but held a clear margin on the line from ANAZONE $8, who had chased the leader on the inside of the above and finished it off well nearer the rail.  LENNY'S LAD raced in clear air behind midfield and looked to have every chance.  UNO TOPS $21 missed the start by 3L, and it was a good effort to fill out the first-four.  Miss Manzanilla had an edge.

Race 7 (1200m) BM75 Federal

ISLAND BAY BOY $1.90 was backed to the exclusion of all but EXOTIC DEEL $4.60 and proved much too good. He was given a beautiful run behind the leading trio and was positioned perfectly on the turn. He stretched out and took over at the 150m and wasn’t pushed out to win easily. DELACOUR $11 led and fought hard before surrendering late to the winner. Exotic Deel began only fairly but followed the winner into the stretch and hit the line in solid fashion beaten 2.7L. There was a gap to the rest. EUROSAY (8) $6 was well-beaten, and the rider suggested he may not have handled the sticky track. The winner was too classy and will go on from this.

Race 8 (1000m) BM60

It was $4.40 the field in the last and a good contest to finish the quaddie and program. CRUCIAL WITNESS and HEZREDHOT ran joint favourites and were both beaten 6.5L. DEVIATE $13 took it out. It was a charge for the lead and the winner sat behind them. He presented into it beautifully and took over at the 100m and was home from there. MILAMBO $7.50 sat midfield and flew home late beaten 0.6L and it was a good effort. TYCOON TILY $9 was kept busy on the speed and there was plenty of merit in here performance holding third. The veteran BYBLOS BOY $21 found the lead at the 600m and was still in front at the 100m. He was tough.  A number didn’t have the best of it including the joint favourites. Not sure what to make of this race from a future viewpoint.
