Racing & Sports Canberra Racing Preview — Sunday 15 November 2020

The Rail is out 7m the Entire and looking at the weather forecast it’s unlikely to race any worse. There’s a real spring feel about the meeting. Plenty of deep races and Sydney gallopers accepted. The Federal is the strongest we’ve seen in a while and creates plenty of interest.

Race 1 (1000m) 2yo Open

All 2yo debutants and speculative how they settle in the run. Tricky and the late market will be instructive. I LIKE BIG PUTTS (4) resumes for Waterhouse-Bott owning a Gosford trial win. Gets the blinkers first time and will run along and looks a decent chance to break through. SNOWDROP (7) debuts off a Randwick trial win. Gets the outside draw but McDougall can manage that and expect the filly to race boldly. BALLO (1) debuts for a strong Sydney yard off a sharp Warwick Farm trial. Gets the rail and expect the colt to run well. MISS OSTEND (6) is a local who looked good in a recent Canberra trial and like Cahill's booking. BET: Leaning to I Like Big Putts on what we've seen.

Race 2 (3400m) BM 85

Frenzied can run them along over the 3400m. DAMBULLA (2) improved again winning over two miles at Wagga for a star yard. He should see out the extra trip better than most and will take beating with McDougall sticking. FRENZIED (1) races on-pace and has won and placed the last two on the Randwick Kensington. Jumps 1000m but is in good hands and is likely to see it right out. DA DEPUTY (3) was beaten a lip 12 days ago at Echuca at two miles and that also stacks up. Scratched at Moonee Valley Friday for this. Gets plenty of weight relief at this level and is a player. BARCOO BILL (7) was well beaten by Dambulla at Wagga but is seasoned and won't be far away. BET: Backing Dambulla.

Race 3 (1400m) CL1

The First Ring can lead from One Step. A tough form assignment. OUTAHAND (5) resumes and is sharp fresh. Ran his best figure here in May just beaten and that more than stacks up. Draws to get a good run and he should be ready to go. THE FIRST RING (1) is Sydney-trained and will run along. Needed the outing resuming and will go close finding his best. The market will be instructive. BRUNELA (9) improved at Orange and then was beaten 1L at the mile at Narromine a month ago. That stacks up and he's drawn well with Cahill booked. OVERFLOWING (6) hasn't been too far away the last two and gets some gear tweaks. A player at best. BET: Leaning to Outahand.

Race 4 (1400m) MDN

Hot pace with Cosmic Bullet booting up from So United and Much Much Better. MUCH MUCH BETTER (1) brings very strong form to resumption for a sharp Sydney-yard. He draws to ride the speed and brings a nice Randwick trial placing. Gets the winkers first time and expect him to be ready to go and take beating. SO UNITED (5) resumes for a leading Sydney barn and has been well-trialled. He's been gelded and is likely to make short work of the sticky gate. A player if the money comes. STRIXEN (6) debuts and is in good hands. Has looked sharp in the two recent trials and should go well. COSMIC BULLET (2) has more to give second-up and will use the rail. Another Sydney galloper to keep very safe. JAC THE GREAT (4) resumed here improved when placing behind Elani Rose. She will have come on but will need a good ride. BET: Like Much Much Better.

Race 5 (2000m) CL1

Expecting Microna to take the lead and try to control it from the front. There was a lot to like about Clem Fandango's win here 12 days ago but he will need to be at the top of his game to roll MICRONA (5) coming off the deserved and big Maiden win at Newcastle when he led. He has the pace to roll over from the wide gate and just needs to hold the form to be winning. CLEM FANDANGO (2) won here comfortably second-up at the mile and the longer trip is right up his alley. He also draws out but is a nice horse in the making and can't be ruled out. KIPPAX (4) is also up from the mile and appeals as the other winning chance. Needs the longer journey and he should get a nice sit. BULWARK (1) has placed the last two the latest this trip. He will use the low gate and should be in it a long way. BET: Going with Microna who brings strong figures.

Race 6 (1600m) BM70 — Federal

Bezos can lead and there are a number who can keep him honest. SCARLEO (8) runs along and won at Rosehill and then disappointed at Randwick after being used-up from the wide gate when well-supported. He's won a Canberra trial since and the form jockey sticks from that. Draws to advantage and can bounce back. MOOKAREENA (5) impressed winning this grade and track 12 days ago over a sprint. She's placed at the mile and is going much better this campaign. She will push forward and is a player if she sees it right out. LOLITA GOLD (7) missed 1L resuming against the above and has strong figures this track and distance. Draws to advantage and fitter should be right in it. BEZOS (1) led as favourite and won the Open comfortably at Wagga, Gets a big weight but has a small claim to assist and expect him to be hard to peg back. BET: Backing Scarleo on a terrific Federal.

Race 7 (1200m) BM60

Strong pace with Mr Kylin and Wicked Willy prominent and a few others not far behind. WANDONNA (9) seeks the hat-trick and has been winning by big spaces. Keeps getting better and has the speed to manage the sticky gate. Will be fancied again and take beating. WICKED WILLY (11) is no slug and led just beaten in the 66 at Goulburn. He draws to ride the speed and sits at a nice level in the weights. Keep him very safe. MR KYLIN (3) is a determined frontrunner drawn well with a 4kg claim. Just missed the hat-trick behind Mookareena in the 70 Federal here 12 days ago and he should go close. AWAY SHE GOES (6) came hard from the back to just miss in the same race and is also a hope keeping the leading hoop. BET: Hard to go past Wandonna in a good contest.

Race 8 (1200m) MDN SW

Of the ones we've seen Invincible Jet and Deepstar will be on speed but some of the debutants are likely to be very nippy as well. Plenty of unknowns making this a tough form assignment and tricky for those wagering the quadrella. ALI'I NUI (9) brings two sharp Warwick Farm trials to debut and gets the blinkers first time. McDougall's booking suggest they are here to win and the market will tell with her along with others. ADDISON RESERVE (8) brings two trials to resumption and just missed the latest at Randwick. Gets the blinkers first-time and will have the speed to clear the sticky gate. Has been away for a while but a bold run is likely. DATE (12) debuts from a low gate off two city trials. Expect him to be ready and go well. POETIC POWER (17) has race experience and was good beaten a whisker here first-up. McDougall gets off but Ford is a more than capable replacement and she won't be far away with a good ride. INVINCIBLE JET (4) will use the rail and did enough on debut at Newcastle to say he should be kept safe. BET: With Ali'i Nui on what we've seen.
