Racing & Sports Canberra Racing Preview — 27 November 2010

The Rail is out 7m the entire. With fine condition forecast the track should present in perfect order. As we get into the program there’s some terrific betting races and the Open Federal will provide the highlight.

Race 1 (1000m) MDN

Volcanic Rock the likely leader. All debutants with three acceptors from top Sydney yards. The market will be instructive. VOLCANIC ROCK (2) owns a 1.5L Randwick trial win and will be ready to go. WILSONS PROM (3) also brings a Randwick trial win and the blinkers are applied. BELLE O'BALLEE (5) has two city trial placings under the belt and the Snowden barn has a 60% strike rate in Canberra off 67 starters. PRINCESS SPICE (6) is Goulburn-trained and looked sharp winning her Warwick Farm trial. BET: Tricky. Leaning to Volcanic Rock on what we've seen.

Race 2 (1000m) MDN

Princess Of Meydan may be the one to lead. PRINCESS OF MEYDAN (8) raced handy and was okay resuming at Kembla Grange off three trial wins. She will have come on and won't have to improve much to go close. EMMA'S GIFT (7) wasn't beaten far here on debut surprising the market and resumes after 177 days for the leading Canberra yard. Draws low and expect her to race boldly with McDougall booked. CAN'T GET ENOUGH (6) resumes and the well-bred filly brings two strong Sydney trials. She's likely to be much improved. RIVER MAC (3) debuts and impressed trialling at Canberra. He can run well. BET: Leaning to Princess Of Meydan.

Race 3 (1000m) CL1

Good early speed with at least three capable of leading. NUREMBURG CASTLE (3) resumed as favourite at Gundagi beaten 2.5L Will be better for that and the blinkers go back on. He has more to give and will be hard to beat with the form hoop sticking for the Matt Dale yard. ASHRA JAHRE (7) resumes off a sharp city trial and go on her first-up heavily-bet Maiden win two-back. She's in good hands and looks ready to go. FEELING MIGHTY (8) made good improvement winning the Maiden here third-up beating Stoltz. He races handy and looks right in it again. CUBMAN (1) won the Maiden comfortably at the provincials and may be best of the two Turner-trained gallopers. He can make the finish with the extra fitness. BET: Leaning to Nuremburg Castle in an interesting contest.

Race 4 (1200m) BM60

A number of leaders engaged and they will scoot along. SUCCESSFUL DAY (4) resumes for the Olive barn off a big win here this grade well-bet. Draws handy and like Penza's booking. No surprise if the lightly-raced mare come back better and takes beating. VOX POP (2) is down from Sydney for John Thompson and go on the near-miss at Gosford two back. Drips a couple of levels in grade and expect the longer sprint to suit fourth-up. INTERCONTINENTAL (8) led and just missed here resuming rating well. Flopped at Gundagai after and prepared to forgive that. He can bounce and prove hard to get past. EUROSAY (6) is capable on his day and may prove next best. BET: With Successful Day if the market reflects stable confidence.

Race 5 (2000m) BM65

Appetising can run them along from Alpine King. DIP ME LID (6) presents at full fitness and is the one to beat. Just missed here at the mile 24 days and has a strong record over the middle distance. The jockey-trainer linkage is hard to go past. NICHOLAS (5) creates plenty of interest. The former Queenslander has his third run for Team Joseph-Jones and has the back-figures that stack right up. Gets Lever and no surprise if he fires today. DOCTOR MANHATTAN (8) is much better than the form-line suggests and go on the near-miss two-back at Kembla Grange this trip. Gets a soft run from the rail but the bar plates going on will be a negative for some. APPETIZING (4) and ALPINE KING (7) both runs along and are contenders bringing their 'A' games. BET: Keen on Dip Me Lid.

Race 6 (1300m) MDN

She Can Talk expected to lead a strong tempo. GAMBLER'S QUEST (19) draws wide but comes to full fitness and looks capable of making it a double for the Dryden yard. His best is good enough and the blinkers are applied first time to sharpen him up. There was money for him last time and he gets one more chance. CHATEAUX PARK (4) resumes and missed a lip in his most recent city trial. He draws well and has the figures to say this is winnable if presented on song. ALWAYS SURE (5) did enough on debut at Hawkesbury to say he's got a future. Had been well trialled and can make quick improvement with Loy taking the ride. The yard has a good record when it brings them here. DOM TYCOON (7) gets the blinkers first time and expect him to go better third-up. BET: Leaning to Gambler's Quest.

Race 7 (1400m) Open – Federal

Peyton Place has good early speed and can set a genuine tempo. SUPREME POLARITY (6) races at peak fitness and brings very strong figures at this trip. Was just nudged out twice at Kembla Grange before the 1L defeat in a rich Open at Gundagai. Draws for a soft on-pace run and is the one to beat. SCARLEO (14) just missed behind the stablemate in the Federal at 70 level 12 days ago as favourite and was wide midfield. Showed he can be competitive at this level and has won 2/3 at the 1400m. Keeps McDougal and will go close again for the in-form local yard. PEYTON PLACE (2) led and won the Open here three back on the heavy by a space and has been ticking along at good level since. He will push forward on the 6-day return and is a player at a favourite track and trip. BALONNE (11) and LOLITA GOLD (12) ran first and third in the aforementioned Federal and can't be ruled out. The former will want the pace on. BET: Backing Supreme Polarity.

Race 8 (1600m) CL1

Genuine tempo with So United leading the way over Upscale. NU JIANG (4) came to the mile and recorded a gutzy Maiden win at Goulburn. He will use the rail again and no surprise if the Snowden-trained gelding immediately takes the next step. UPSCALE (9) is also Sydney-trained and has been racing well without winning. He will also use the low gate and gets a gear tweak. Rates a definite hope. POST FREE (6) impressed winning the Gundagai Maiden third-up and McDougall sticks from that. She can go on now but draws outside and that's the query. SO UNITED (13) led as a firm favourite but faded on debut at Kembla Grange for the strong city barn. Draws to control the race and sharp improvement won't surprise. SINGING RIVER (8) may be next best. BET: With Nu Jiang if the money comes.
