Racing & Sports Canberra Racing Preview — 22 January 2021

A hot day is forecast in Canberra and the track will race in the good range. The rail is out 8 Metres the entire. Some small - but interesting - fields earlier in the program. The Open for 2yos will create interest and the field for the Federal is strong at 70 level.

Race 1 (2000m) BM65

INVINCIBLE DASH (3) missed a lip here 9-days ago at the mile and comes to the middle distance for the first time. Brings good figures and gets weight relief. Ward goes on the well-bred gelding should see it right out and prove tough to beat. LAMINGTON DRIVE (2) won this trip on the same day and it was a strong staying effort. Keeps holding his form and can go on with it with the top hoop sticking. ALPINE KING (5) won and then placed here behind Dip Me Lid and that galloper has won since. Uses the rail and is well-in with the claim. ZOUNIQUE (4) is a definite winning chances finding his best VIC form and should be ready to show something at his third run for the Pepper yard. BET: Going with Invincible Dash.

Race 2 (1000m) CL1

A number race handy and are capable of pushing on to lead the sprint. WINDS OF WAR (1) won the Maiden as expected before the spell and then raced favourite again but disappointed in much stronger than this at Canterbury. Has trialled sharply at Rosehill since and expect him to be here to win. MO MORE CHICKEN (3) was back to his best missing a lip at Orange. Keeps Cahill and is a chance to go one better. RED KANZI (4) won the Maiden here making good improvement. She will only be improved and can't be ruled out. TURFEZE (2) is knocking on the door and McDougall's booking is a push. Uses the rail and should take pegging back. BET: Winds Of War if the money comes.

Race 3 (1000m) MDN

Dreamliner may get a comfortable lead. DREAMLINE (6) is clearly the best of the raced and forget the latest in town on the heavy. The form from the two prior reads well and the leading hoop rides first time. The one to beat. BROTHERS OF ANTRIM (2) debuts from the rail and looked sharp in his recent Wagga trial. Cahill's booking suggests they expect a bold run. MIXED UP FACTOR (7) has trialled well here for the debut. In a canny yard and keep very safe. SMUGGLER'S RUN (4) is another local on debut and is likely to be better than the trial finish suggests. BET: Dreamliner sets a decent standard.

Race 4 (1400m) BM60

Genuine tempo with Bolson and Flight Commander running them along. BOLSON (3) is a fast and resumes for a leading Sydney yard and the latest city trial was sharp. Brings very strong form from the last campaign for a race of this calibre and McDougall's booking suggests they mean business. FLIGHT COMMANDER (4) was expected to win the 66 at Gundagai and disappointed supporters. The two before read okay for this and expect a much better effort from him back home. EQUAL BALANCE (2) will be better for the two runs back and will find this easier than the CL3 at Randwick. He'd be very competitive and best and should be ready to show it over the longer sprint. DIVINE APPROACH (1) is also third-up with more to give. Finds a bit easier than Nowra and the 3kg claim brings her into it. BET: Keen on Bolson.

Race 5 (1300m) MDN

Nothing to run them along here so pace only average. PANDERING (3) is clearly the one to beat for the hot Dryden-McDougall linkage. Disappointed as favourite at Moruya, but the near-miss here prior reads well. Presents fitter and will get a good ride. MORE SHOTS (11) was back and wide here first-up beaten less than 3L. Has been missing the kick, but is capable of riding the speed if she jumps with them. Her best Queensland form stacks right up and she'll be fitter. THE DEEPEST SECRET (4) resumed improved for Nick Olive just beaten at Wagga from back in the field when expected to need it. Keeps Ward and won't have to improve much to be a chance. SUPER SOLAR (2) is Sydney-trained and gets the blinkers first time. Had no luck in the country on debut but his presence here interests. BET: Backing Pandering.

Race 6 (1000m) Open 2YO

All but one are debutants and speculative how the 2yos settle in the run. STATE CAPITAL (4) resumes for a leading Sydney yard of two city trial placings and looks ready to go. Draws to advantage and the market will be instructive - as it will with most of the others. DELIGHTFUL DENNI (9) debuts and trialled positively at Nowra. She profiles well and expect a bold run. TILIANAM (12) is a stablemate to State Capital and won at Randwick the first of her two trials. Gets a low gate and keep very safe. HARDERTHANTHEREST (10) debuts for the leading Canberra yard and McDougal sticks from the trial. No surprise if she's very competitive.  BADEN ROAD (8) debuts for a Sydney barn owning a sharp Randwick trial. Gets the blinkers first time and the late betting will tell with her as well. BET: Tricky. State Capital on what we've seen.

Race 7 (1200m) BM70 Federal

Good early speed with Mr Kylin and Eltham Palace prominent. A strong line-up. KATTEGAT (7) won the Moruya CL3 easily third-up as expected building on the two city placings. He has the figures and the upside. Draws for a soft run and performs fourth-up. Looks the one to beat. MR KYLIN (6) led and missed a lip here in Open grade and then raced in the rich Magic Millions Country Cup (Open) on the Gold Coast beaten 3L. Is back after 13 days so must be pleasing and the leading hoop will have him quickly on the speed. TEJORI (5) placed twice including in town and then was heavily-backed in Open grade at Wagga and led and stopped. She's won a Canberra trial since and is a decent chance on rebound. MNEMENTH (3) resumes for the Albury yard and the late market will be interesting with him. Led and won the 66 before the spell and can come back to racing even better. Anticipate a bold run riding the speed from the low gate. BET: Backing Kattegat to win.

Race 8 (1600m) CL1

Looks a solid tempo with Tiz War Bro striding to the front. TIMELY SHADOW (6) never got into it in stronger at Warwick Farm on a heavy track but missed a lip prior in the Hawkesbury 64 on the dry against her own sex. Rates strongly in this line-up and McDougall rides and will give him every chance to record a deserved win. CLEM FANDANGO (1) has just been beaten the last two at this level and trip and also deserves another win. The latest was his best and he will go close. OUTAHAND (2) was tracking okay before the latest here when he disappointed after settling last in the 7 horse field. Just missed at his only go at the mile and can make the finish with a good ride from the wide gate. TRUST THE GUT (12) met trouble in the home turn here 9 days ago. Still a Maiden but has ability and may be best of the rest. BET: Going with Timely Shadow.
