Racing & Sports Canberra Preview - 22 April 2022

Racing & Sports Canberra Racing Preview — Friday 22 April 2022

The track is likely to present in the soft range. It has seen plenty of racing and the rail is out 10m the Entire. That suggests it will suit on pacers and low gates. Solid fields and most races will be good betting affairs.

Race 1 (1000m) Bm65

WASHINGTON TOWERS (1) couldn't have been more impressive first up leading and winning a Federal here at 70 level. Has a 4kg claim in easier grade and can run them along from the low gate. Tipping he can go on with it. DELIGHTFUL DREAM (7) was well-supported and impressed missing a lip here 7-days ago in the 60. Must be pleasing at home and has upside. BROTHERS OF ANTRIM (3) was beaten 3.6L in the same race and best to go on the nose defeat here this grade and trip prior. Has a 2kg claim today and has genuine claims. SEVENTH SEAL (2) resumes with a 3kg claim and goes fresh. Ran his best race two-back beaten a lip in a Wagga Open and that would have him in the finish.

BET: Sticking with Washington Towers.

Race 2 (1600m) Bm60

Not much between the better ones. DENMISS (3) wasn't beaten far here 7-days ago after a slow off and meeting some trouble on the turn. Loy sticking in the saddle is a plus as is the handy draw. Expect her to go close. LOOSE LOVE (7) pulled and raced wide in the CL1 on the same day, and it was a good effort beaten 1.9L. He's right up to this and is worth another chance. MERCURY (1) was lipped out in the Denmiss race a 3-1F. Tends to be slow off so the rail needs managing. A decent winning chance all the same. LA VALKYRIE (9) is racing well and is in the mix again.

BET: Going with Denmiss.

Race 3 (1300m) Mdn

VAAROOM (4) led in a change of tactics and just found one too good here 14 days ago. Spiked him figures and looks poised to deliver on his promise. Loy is a key jockey switch, and he clearly rates to go one better. REDHAIR'N'FRECKLES (8) settled back and finished well beaten 1.3L at Wagga on debut. Has the rail and Cahill is a key jockey switch. Fitter now and is a quinella hope. NYOTA (7) presents for a strong Sydney barn and showed enough on debut to say she can be in the money. She'd been well-trialled and Dolan steers from a handy gate. The Sydney-trained LITTLE MISS QUINN (3) may be the best of the debutants. Has been well-trialled in town but the wide barrier needs managing.

BET: Expecting Vaaroom to have them covered.

Race 4 (1000m) Mdn SW

PENTHOUSE (12) resumes for the sharp Matt Dale barn and has the figures to be winning this. Placed on debut in Listed grade in Brisbane and then was spelled off the near miss at Moruya bet 7-4F. She's sure to have come on and will take plenty of beating if presented on-song. ICE ON FIRE (7) is also in good local hands. Led and was just nudged out here first-up heavily bet. Had come off a very long break and is sure to be improved. She will run along from a handy gate and will take passing.  MARVELOUS (2) resumes and will be very competitive if presented ready. The only fresh effort was good and the provincial efforts after read well. SEQUIN DRESS (10) debuts for a leading Sydney barn and the city trials have been good. Very wary of her and elevate if the big money comes.

BET: Backing Penthouse.

Race 5 (1400m) Bm 70 - Federal

Very open on paper. The dual accepter SHADDY (11) appeals most. Resumed here beaten 1.3L in the CL2 for the new barn further improved and that stacks up. Had trialled well in town prior and the longer sprint suits. Gets plenty of weight relief at this level and draws to advantage. CRUCIAL WITNESS (8) impressed just missing here before the break and then found one much too good on resumption. The longer trip suits and Loy is a key jockey booking. Draws for the run of the race and is a player. PROPOSE A TOAST (5) was quickly back to his best here second up taking out the 65. Fitter now and should be right in it riding the speed. MILAMOO (4) is in a rare vein of form and surprised the market again just missing behind Devil's Triangle following the first-up win. Keeps the 3kg claim and will be fitter again. MR ALOYSIUS (10) led and gave it away late here 7-days ago this grade. Was much better beaten 1L prior this trip and is suited on a track likely to suit on-pacers.

BET: Going with Shaddy each way.

Race 6 (1000m) CL1

ESSONNE (9) was well-supported winning the Maiden here on debut off strong trials. This is a step-up but with the extra fitness and experience fitter tipping he can go on with it drawn to advantage. DRUMMIN (4) is speedy and won the Maiden easily here first-up and has more to give. Needs some luck crossing the field from an outside gate but is right in it. MOOSHAKA (6) placed as favourite at Wagga on the heavy off the near miss first-up. Fitter and has the blinkers applied first time. Can make the finish with a good ride from the awkward barrier. MIL CIENTO (5) impressed winning the Maiden win and then disappointed after on the Goulburn heavy. Has an outside gate but Loy is a key jockey switch and expect quick improvement.

BET: Leaning to Essonne.

Race 7 (1600m) CL1 SW

PORTNOY (11) is in a form Sydney barn and resumed at Scone off a Warwick Farm trial and placed beaten 1.7L. Raced handy and has more to give. Draws for a soft on-pace run and Cahill is a key jockey booking. COPPERSONIC (5) was quickly back to his best beaten a nose at Orange on the heavy. Has comparable dry track form and will be fitter again. Draws well and the mile suits. JIGGLER (4) was okay here on debut as favourite and then belted the Goulburn Maidens on resumption. Worked to the speed and they didn't get near him. Has an outside gate but Loy sticks and that assists. Fitter and a player with average luck. MEMOIRE PARFAIT (10) had been well-trialled but looked in need of the debut run at the mile. He also gets an awkward barrier but can push forward. In a top Sydney barn and quick improvement is anticipated.

BET: Going with Portnoy.

Race 8 (1300m) CL2

TWIG (9) was a bet a 7-2 favourite here on resumption and was just okay. Brought strong form to that and she will be fitter, and the winkers go on again. Gets the jockey switch to Brock Ryan and she can improve sharply for the hot local barn. BEAU ROCK (4) impressed with the easy CL1 here before disappointing two-weeks ago. Has the speed to manage the awkward gate and no surprise if he bounces back. RHYTHMBOAT (8) quickly found form for the new barn winning the Gundagai Maiden comfortably. He has more to give and will get every chance to take the next step. RADIOHEAD (5) won the CL1 here this trip at his only run last campaign. Resumes and is sure to have come on. Draws well and keep a close eye on the race-day betting.
