Racing and Sports Canberra Review - 6 December 2024
Race 1 2000m BM 65
JUST BOOGIE $4.2 led all the way to record a strong win. He clapped on the pace in the early stages and had enough in store to deliver by 0.91L. The favourite CICADA $3.10 sat on the above but was under pressure at the turn and fell away from that point. Second-placed GATCHAN $6 was a touch unlucky. She railed beyond midfield and had closed to be within 2L at the turn. Under hands and heels she disappointed for a run inside the winner, and once clear, hit the line well. Third-placed ZONTAWAH $12 ran a good race. He sat forward inside Cicada and looked a winning chance inside the 200m, beaten 1.02L. Just Boogies had to do it at both ends, and it was a strong effort.
Race 2 1000m MDN
It was a tricky race to assess, but it was the second-favourite MISS BACKCHAT $4.40 who defied a betting drift to win by the barest of margins. The locally trained AZZUCCA $16 almost caused the upset and finished a half-length clear of HEY JUDE $11. They were clear of the rest. Miss Backchat flew the gates to lead at a reasonable clip and they were reasonably bunched behind. She gave a good lick approaching the 200m and just held on. Azzucca railed and headed for home 2L adrift. She worked across the winner’s heels at the 250m and was eating into the margin at the post. Hey Jude had a wall in front as they headed for the judge but when a split came, she motored home to hold a clear third. The favourite sat SAFRANO $3.20 sat on Miss Backchat and was three-wide at the turn. She was under pressure at the 250m and dropped away beaten 6.3L. It was a tidy effort by the speedy debutant Miss Backchat, who was in front and out of trouble.
Race 3 1600m CL1
DUE CALZINI $2.05F was expected to have this field covered but was beaten 2L in third. SCARLI JAPALI $8-$6.50 prevailed by a whisker from MALBORK CASTLE $4.40. It was busy early with outsiders held the leading spots. Scarli Japali settled sixth and Due Calzini and Malbork Castle positioned at the back. SOUL TAKER $8.50 had a soft run and led them up. She was claimed by Scarli Japali at the 200m. After making a looping run around the field, Malbork Castle was putting in the big ones down the middle of the track. Malbork Castle’s exertions told in the shadows of the post. Due Calzini stuck to the rail and enjoyed a nice run-through. He battled on well. Good efforts the first two home.
Race 4 1300m MDN
The heavily-bet DUBAI WARRIOR $1.90 was the first and only favourite to win on the day. He delivered by 1.2L from a rank outsider EROTSAS $101 who finished a whisker ahead of CIAO BELLA MIA $13. GLORY $9 was 2L from the winner in fourth. Plenty wanted a part of the early action and there were four gallopers vying to lead at the 1000m. Dubai Warrier was in that division settling third and off the rail. He turned three wide and took the lead approaching the 200m from Glory. The placed pair Erotas and Ciao Bell Mia settled a long way back. In the straight Ciao Bella Mia came off heals and sprinted quickly and Erotas came off her heels and was also finishing strongly down the middle. They were closing the margin on the line and there was plenty of merit in their efforts. Having said that, the winner didn’t get it easy on the speed and did enough. Doubt the race will be a strong form reference.
Race 5 1000m BM55
ALL TOO LUCKY $5 looked a decent chance and prevailed by 0.7L over You Wish $8.50. There was a gap then to KISSING SUPIDO $5, who crossed the line 3.5L from the winner. The $4.60F favourite CAPTAIN NAY was well beaten. Kissing Supido broke clear to lead Captain Nay was the widest of the chasing pair. You wish was next, very wide. All Too Lucky settled back but came off heels at the top of the straight and was in clear air. Kissing Supido was still in front approaching the 200m but was under siege. After a brief tussle, All To Lucky got the better of You Wish at the 75m and was going strongly on the line. The winner ran about adding merit to the effort.
Race 6 1200m OPEN – Federal
An even Federal and the $4.60 favourite LANG PARK was the disappointment beaten 7.2L. Two of the three remaining gallopers in the market - CHARLEMAGNE $5 and PROPHET’S PRIDE $6 - ran the quinella in that order, with 1L between them. ONYA LIONAL $31 was 3.5L from the winner in third, with DEVINE MISS $6 close-up next. Prophet’s Pride led from the jump. Onya Lional settled forward of midfield off the rail. Charlemagne was settled rearward just ahead of Devine Miss, who gave them all a start Charlemagne commended a wide forward at the 600m and was the widest on the turn. Prophet’s pride was still clear at the 150m but was soon overwhelmed by Charlemagne who drew clear under hands and heals. Onya Lional battled away in third just ahead of Devine Miss who had cut the corner. Lang Park raced forward and looked to have every chance. The winner got no favours and was too good.
Race 7 1400m CL2
ADOLPHUS $4.40 drifted in the betting but the lightly raced galloper managed a tight win on resumption and will be better for the outing. An outsider BREAKAWAY WEEK got to with 0.43L, with CONSIDER IT READY 1.1L from the winner in third. There was a 2L gap then to the favourite MISS GHENT $3.80. FLYING IMPALA $4.80 scorched over from a wide barrier to lead clearly from Breakaway Week. Adolphus and Miss Ghent paired off next, with the latter a little wide. Breakaway Week made the lead at the 100m, but Adolphus kept coming on his inside to get the verdict. Consider it ready settled off- middle in a bunch and found a spilt on the turn. She powered home down the middle and a win beckons. NETTLES $5.50 looked to have her chance. CRAZY ATOM $21 mucked the start and almost fell.
