Racing and Sports Canberra Review - 25 November 2023
Race 1, 1200m Mdn
Maher-Eustace-trained debutant LADY BOSS $8.50 didn’t have a jockey declared until after 8:30am SAT and it proved the right move to keep her in. Took the race out by nearly 4L from a wall of runners including the stablemate and favourite SLUSH FUND $4. Lady Boss sat outside the leader while Slush Fund missed the jump and pushed forward to settle behind midfield. Lady Boss took over at the 250m and never looked like being beaten. ZAZEL $6 sat behind the leading pair and poked the head through to just claim second from BRAZEN ARTIST $7 who enjoyed a soft run but turned the widest. There was a whisker between her and the next two home. Lady Boss is a nice mover who secured the right run and was much too good.
Race 2, 1600m Bm 70
GEOSTORM $31 improved to place on the soft at Goulburn in a Bm50 over 1400m at Goulburn and then spiked his figures here winning the Bm70 in similar conditions over a mile. Carrying a low weight, she just nudged out FINAL COMMENT $3.40 with RELIABLE DUDE $3.10F close-up next, just ahead of STRATUM PRIDE $3.80. Geostorm found an easy lead and raced keen down the back. Final Comment railed in third 4L behind the leader, with Reliable Dude on his flank. There were five chances they passed the 200m, but Geostorm fought like a tiger to just hold out Final Comment who was eating into the margin. Not much between these but the winner’s effort was tough belying her market odds. They had their chance to beat him.
Race 3, 1300m Bm 60
It was a competitive betting race with the $4.40F WILKSHIRE winning by 0.7L from VAAROOM $10 with EVE ‘N’ RUBY 1.4L from the winner in third. The speed was right on from the outset with ALENIA $6 burning plenty of petrol to find the front. No surprise to see her fold-up not long after the turn for home. Vaaroom jumped well but was restrained to take the sit behind the leader. Wilshire railed beyond midfield but cleverly eased off and was well positioned turning for home. Eve ‘N’ Ruby was last on the rail passing the 600m. Vaaroom was exposed early hitting the front clearly after the 250m and looked the winner before Wilkshire gobbled him up in the shadow of the post. Eve ‘N’ Ruby also hit the line well and it was a good effort. The winner is super consistent and Vaaroom put his best foot forward today and almost pulled it off.
Race 4, 1400m Mdn – TAB Federal
ADOLPHUS ran a drifting $3.50 favourite and had to be content with third-placing 3L behind the impressive winner TOES IN THE WATER $4.40. BIG RAY $4.20 split this pair beaten 2.2L. Big Ray led a canter with Toes In The Water pulling on his flank passing the 1000m. Toes In The Water closed in on the turn and quickly had Big Ray’s measure winning as she liked. Adolphus settled down rearward and was the only one to make ground. But it was impossible for him the way the race was run. Toes In The Water is a beautiful mover, and the filly will win better races than this for Nick Olive.
Race 5, 1200m Bm 45
A tough Bm 45 to sort on paper and there was an upset with the local HELL RIGHT $20 winning and there was just a nose separating him from SHE’S JESSIE $3.8 and HOWGOODISVEGAS $13. The favourite ULTRAGIRL was next home just 0.7L from the winner. The speed was hot with four lined up at the 750m going hell for leather. She’s Jessie was the widest of these as they approached to home turn. The pair that got the soft run behind were Hell Right and Howgoodisvegas. There looked plenty of chances passing the 200m with a whisker separating the first three finishers on the line. A big effort from She’s Jessie under the 4kg claimer. She had every right to toss in the towel. The eye-catcher was Ultragirl who was last on turning and made up a ton of ground. Cambridge Rules, Newtown Is Coming and Cartography were the other three burning turf upfront, and all dropped out. The winner had been racing in the bush and it all worked out nicely for him.
Race 6, 2000m Cl1
The local JIMMY NAILS started the $2.70F but had to be content with second, beaten 1.5L behind RUFF $5.50. KANOOZI $21 was next home with the second-favourite DIVAZINO making fourth, 2.5L from the winner. It was a steady tempo with Ruff racing a bit keen in fourth in the early and middle stages but loomed up menacingly as they turned. Ruff found 1L before the 100m and easily held Jimmy Nails who secured a soft run in transit. Kanoozi was pocketed on turning and didn’t have the best of it after and there was merit in her placing. Divazino looked to have every chance.
Race 7, 1400m Quality
The money came for SUPER HELPFUL $3.30F on the $200,000 feature and she obliged in a close go with SUPARAZI $9. PEACE OFFICER $7.50, CAVALIER CHARLES $5, and I'VE BEAN TRYIN' $6 all had support and were the next three home, although clearly beaten. Cavalier Charles surprisingly raced forward today and sat on the longshot leader. Super Helpful raced off the rail at the head of the ruck and was travelling deep but comfortably and they came to the turn. Cavalier Charles hit the lead at the 200m but was well and truly under siege at the 100m. Super Helpful flew down the middle and held off Suparazi who had railed second last most of the trip and weaved away through in the straight to record an impressive effort. Peace Officer hit the line well, but along with I’ve Bean Trying’ had too much too do. Super Helpful looked the winner a long way out. A big and popular win Team Joseph-Jones
Race 8, 1200m Bm 75.
SMOKE SHOW $3.50 and YENDY $2.60F looked the two to beat and there was only a nose in it in that order on the line. LIGHT PRESS $4.40 was next home less than 1L from the winner. LONDON GIRL $6 led eventually after almost going down on her nose after jumping. The first three home were all positioned well and handy. They were across the track at the 200m and spaced it was hard to pick between the top two on the line. ANNUAL $21 came up the rail beaten 1L and his effort is also worth a mention. Not much between these and the finish suggests.
