Racing and Sports Canberra Review - 10 July 2024

Race 1 1080m Bm50

An open betting race behind the $2.80F PAPAVER MINER who worked to find the lead but was found wanting at the business end. The winner DON’T THINKABOUTIT $5.50 sat off pace and came into it strongly at the 300m. Under hands and heels from the apprentice he just held out the strong finishing pair I IZ BRILLIANT $9.50 and SKEPTICISM $11. I Iz Brilliant settled back and was held up rounding the home turn and early part of the straight. A good effort. Skepticism was also held up rounding the home turn. BOWIE OF DUBAI $7 raced wide throughout.

Race 2 1206m CL1

Joe Pride-trained STAR DIESEL $2.60F was expected to win but had to be content with second place a whisker behind the local HURRICANE ABLOWING $5.50-$5.0. TOLIMA $15 and HUDDERSFIELD $15 were close-up next with a gap to the rest. Tolima held the rail but was pressured by Star Diesel from the 1000m on his outside. Hurricane Ablowing had a sweet sit behind the speed. Tolima was tough and was still in from at the 100m but was overrun in the shadows of the post. Star Diesel had to absorb a stack of pressure and he gave his all. Huddersfield belted home after a slow start. He still races new but is worth following. KENYAN CHARM $5.50 was well beaten. The jockey said he may have resented the kickback and he pulled up with an issue.

Race 3 1080m Mdn

It was a good betting affair with RICKYTHESTEAMBOAT $2.90 heading the betting. His drifting stablemate ANGEL IN THE WIND took the race out by a neck from CHAMP DE MARS $5.50 with DOLLY THE DIVA $14 less than 1L from the winner in third. Rickythesteamboat was a clear fourth a half-length further back. There was a stack of early pressure with Dollythediva just leading and they were across the track on the turn. Champ De Mars railed and had the best sit. Angel In The Wind followed her up. Rickythesteamboat was midfield and wide. Turning, Champ De Mars burst to a clear lead, but the winner got a sweet run through and was coming hard and got up on the line. Dollythediva fought on well and Rickythesteamboat powered home down the outside.  He was held up rounding the home turn and at the 200m and will save for another day. DAICOS missed the jump and raced wide throughout.

Race 4 1280m Mdn SW

The local PUSHALOT $5 wasn’t fazed by the longer sprint delivering by 0.7L from the Sydney-trained debutant OTONO $12 and COMB OVER CON $10 who was 1.3L from the winner. The hot favourite JUST EASY $1.92 was next home beaten 2.8L. Again, there was plenty of pressure early with Pushalot finding the lead from an inside barrier. Just Easy had a good run behind the leading pair. Comb Over Con settled midfield. Otono was slow away and bustled up along the rail to settle some 5L from the leader. Pushalot held a 2L lead at the 200m and held off Otono. Comb Over Con was the widest on turning and came hard and was full of running on the line. A big effort. Just Easy found a split on the turn but didn’t finish it off. The winner is speedy and fights. The next pair to greet the judge aren’t far off a win.

Race 5 1280m Bm60

The winner CHIEF WITNESS raced a $2.80 favourite and was heavily backed in from $4.20. The other runner fancied on form, ALL ASTERN, drifted out from $3.70 to start $6 and was beaten more than 8L. She raced wide but her rider felt she was still disappointing. She was vet-cleared. FERRARI GIRL found a soft lead. Chief Witness was slow away but was urged forward along the rail to settle around 4L from the lead. The second-placed MISSILE MAID $9.50 settled last but stuck to the rail while others fanned out and found herself in a threatening position as they headed for home. Ferrari Girl was under pressure at the 200m and was grabbed by Missile Maid who looked likely before Chief Witness flew from well back and was much too good on the line. The Sydney-trained galloper had a bit on them, and the betting suggested.

Race 6 1280m Bm 75 – Federal

LOVE SHUCK $2.70 jumped a firm favourite and defeated BATTLE ABBEY $6 and DEVINE MISS $9 in a ding-dong go. The fifth runner home was just 1.5L from the leader on the post. CAMERLENGO $13 and SPINOSAURUS$10 paired off in front. Love Shuck was in the next division three wide down the back. Battle Abbey and Devine Miss were further back. They had closed up at the 200m and it was anybody’s race.  There were four across the track at the 50m with Love Shuck through the middle just getting the decision. Not much between these as the finish attested. FANGELA $9 was held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.  VAINSTREAM $14 was tailed off and connections felt he may not have appreciated the synthetic surface.

Race 7 1750m CL1 SW

This was a tough race on paper with plenty of trust required with the short-priced favourite QUADTRATIC $2.25 who was back substantially in trip for the new yard. She was beaten 3L in fifth, with the first four being filled by value chances. KISSES FOR JODY $26 defeated FIREALARM $15 by a half-length, with BLIND DATE $8.50 next home 2L from the winner. The favourite was driven hard from the jump and was very wide heading into the back in search of the lead. She found that at the 1300m but had burnt plenty of juice. Kisses For Jodie railed behind the leading division and the other placegetters were all in reasonable spots midfield. Quadtratic still held a margin at the 600m, but the field had compacted. The leader gave a kick but was under pressure at the 200m. Kisses for Jodie shot through on the inside passing the 150m and got the better of Firealarm. BLIND DATE hit the line hard to grab third. Quadratic is a nice moving filly but too much was asked of her. MARGARET’S MISSILE $6.50 hit the line okay. MONOMAKH $8 was beaten a mile. She raced wide and may not have backed up (vet cleared).
