Racing and Sports Canberra Racing Preview Friday 7 February

Another excellent Canberra Friday meeting. The rail is out 8m the entire. Showers may occur on the day and it will pay to keep a close eye on the weather map.

Race 1 (1000m) Open 2

Mostly debutants and speculative how they settle. The market will be instructive. ONE SUPER CHICK (6) debuts and owns a sharp Canberra trial. Ward’s booking is a plus and she’s a speedster who is sure to take beating. ILE FLOTTANTE (8) debuted at Canterbury owning a big trial win at Warwick Farm and dropped out caught wide without cover. Draws well and expect a much improved effort. DANCIN' TIL DAWN (3) has had two trials to gear-up for her debut and looks to have plenty of ability. DIFFERENT TIME (4) wasn’t pushed out in her trial and no surprise if she races boldly. SUPERNACULUM (7) debuts for the in-form Dryden yard and McDougall’s booking suggests she’s going okay. Respect the linkage and keep a close eye on the betting. BET: #6 One Super Chick appeals on what we’ve seen.

Race 2 (1600m) CL1

A few can race handy and are capable of leading. LADY KIRKHAM (5) brings strong form to peak and go on the lip defeat this track and distance two runs ago. She will roll forward and is the one they have to beat. POWER LIFT (3) will also be at his best for this and gets to the mile for the first time. It should suit and he’s the one to fear. EAGLEHAWK (1) resumed for the new yard as an improved galloper. He will use the low gate and it wouldn’t surprise to see him go on. Danny Williams has persevered with SUPA HONG KONG (8) led and was much better at the Sapphire Coast 6 days ago. He’s a well-tried Maiden, but shouldn’t be far away on that effort and with Lever taking over from the apprentice. #5 Lady Kirkham gives herself every chance and is hard to go past.

Race 3 (2000m) BM65

Prolongo draws low and can run them along with a 4kg claim. TRIBBIANI (5) returned to his best six days ago winning the Sapphire Coast BM58 as the market expected. The middle distance shouldn’t bother this time around and he rates a winning chance. Matt Dale stablemate DARK CONFIDANT (2) comes to peak and forget the latest when she was outgraded in town. Just missed here and at Kembla the two prior and she should relish the longer trip. SHAKE ON IT (3) can build on the Bathurst win and HOTEL AMOUR (1) can improve third-up for the Sydney yard with the handy claim. BET: Back and/or save the two top selections.

Race 4 (1000m) Maiden

A number of the raced are fast early and they should fly along. This is tricky and the market will tell a lot. DEEP CRYSTAL (4) runs along and just missed at Canterbury on debut before leading beaten 1.6L at the same venue as a hot favourite. She’s very well suited and McDougall’s booking adds to the confidence. ABSOLUTE PUZZLE (9) debuts for Gai and Adrian and owns two Randwick trial wins. Draws out a bit but looks to have a stack of ability and has to be feared. ENAMOUR (7) just missed at Wyong from the front and then was slow off and plain in a strong form race at Gosford. She’s been kept up to the mark with a Randwick trial win and a bounce is on the cards with an in-form claimer aboard, and an advantageous gate. RADIOHEAD (1) debuts and has looked the part in his Queanbeyan and Canberra trials. The 3kg claimer rides well and no surprise if the gelding is competitive at long odds. BET: Leaning to #4 Deep Crystal with the race experience.

Race 5 (1300m) Maiden

Monstrosity can push over and lead and expect a solid tempo. A tricky contest with a number of gallopers capable of quick improvement. MONSTROSITY (3) has had two runs back in provincial grade and is and improved galloper. He’d warmed up with two trial wins and this looks a very suitable third-up assignment. He may control the race and is sure to take passing. WICKED WILLY (6) also brings good form to the third-up run. It was a tough effort placing to Warwick Farm 23 days ago and he draws low today. His best is good enough. STAND YOUR GROUND (14) wasn’t far away resuming off a wide gate. She’s showed glimpses of ability and could be a surprise package drawn low with the handy 3kg claim.  LAKE MARION (7) is an improver who will race handy and has to be kept onside. MADAM SECRETARY (10) debuts for a hot Sydney yard and has been well trialled. The market will tell. BET: Expect #3 Monstrosity to be hard to beat.

Race 6 (1300m) CL1

A race with not a lot of early speed. CLASSIC GAMING (1) belted home first-up to win the Maiden at Beaumont (Newcastle) heavily-backed and then was beaten 1.8L at Kembla in stronger than this and had excuses as favourite. He draws low and is one that can race handy. In a leading national yard and is clearly the one to beat. CANYONERO (2) will be very competitive at best and prepared to forgive his last two efforts. Wasn’t beaten far without luck at Gosford 22 days ago and he looks well-placed with Sherry’s 2kg claim. YOUR KNUCKLESHIP (5) didn’t have the late speed second-up over the short sprint and 1300m looks the right progression. He won’t be far away. CYBORG (4) impressed winning the Maiden here resuming and is capable of building on that. WAR DECK has ability and may be presented more forward this time around. Capable of surprising. BET: #1 Classic Gaming is on the up and looks a best bet.

Race 7 (1400m) BM70

Supreme Polarity may be the one to run them along. A number of these contested this grade at the last Canberra meeting and it looks just as competitive. SUPREME POLARITY (1) presents off stronger city races and two back just missed at Canterbury. He runs along and being back 150m can work to his favour. In good hands and despite the big weight he goes on top in an open contest. ROSEIRRO (8) made it a double winning the Highway Handicap by a space at Rosehill 20 days ago. That was a big peak and just needs a good ride from the wide gate to go close. MOOKAREENA (11) was the unlucky story in the equivalent Federal two weeks ago. She’s a money muncher, but there’s no doubting her ability and there’s every indication she’s back on song. POLYXENA (6) just missed in the same race and is improved. Races handy and gets Loy for the apprentice. KATHAIRE (12) was backed into favourite in that Federal and was slow away and caught wide. McDougall is a key jockey switch. BET: # Supreme Solidarity will make his own luck and looks an each way gamble without going overboard. Exotics value among the selections.

Race 8 (1200m) BM60

There are a number capable of leading and expect a strong tempo. A recast preview now that the scratchings picture is clear. VELVET AEROPLANE (11) appeals despite the wide gate. Resumed as favourite at Randwick 13 days ago off a strong trial and disappointed. Finds much easier and the tongue tie is applied and that could be the key. In a top yard and she can make amends. FLORA BEL (6) just missed resuming in a stronger Federal at 70 level and is improved. Gets the in-form McDougall today and is a genuine winning chance in this grade. MAJOR TIME (4) has elected to race here and no knock on his form. He just needs to see out a strong 1200m. HONEYSUCKLE CHOICE (10) comes to peak with a 2kg claim and will push forward. Should be ready to show her best Victorian form and that gives her a chance. BID OF FAITH (14) just missed at Wagga and that stacks up. She will use the handy gate and gets a 3kg claim for a promising apprentice. ROMEO VELLA (8) is fast and was building nicely before the flat effort at Wagga. He will clear the gate okay and Penza is an interesting booking. BET: #11 Velvet Aeroplane to turn things around and cover in a few quinellas.
