Mugatoo Good in the TAB Canberra Cup

A devastating turn of foot and a peach of a ride from Kerrin McEvoy was enough to deliver a TAB Canberra Cup to Kris Lees, Australian Bloodstock and Mugatoo (IRE). The imported stayer showed why so many good judges think he is bound for great things. Mugatoo (IRE) is three wins from three starts on Australian Soil and has since firmed into $8 equal favourite for the Group 1 Sydney Cup.

Bjorn Baker and Tim Clark tried to give locals deja vu with front running effort in the $250,000 Listed TAB Canberra Cup but Fun Fact could only manage second. Nick Olive’s local hope Maid of Ore was enormous in  third and has significantly increased her breeding stocks with a black-type placing.

Earlier, Godolphin looked most likely to strike in the $150,000 Listed XXXX Gold Canberra Guineas with odds on favourite Knickpoint but it was stablemate Promotions for James Cummings and Hugh Bowman who claimed victory, John Thompson’s Chat was second.
The first three races were taken out by Canberra-based Trainers Norm Gardner, Joseph & Jones Racing and Gary Kirkup taking the total to eight out of 16 races across the Carnival. A great result for a strong local contingent of Trainers.

TAB Canberra Cup Day marked the end of the inaugural Canberra Carnival. The Carnival saw a great standard of racing and will continue to strengthen in the years to come.
