Good Friday to host the inaugural Tuggeranong Cup

The Canberra Racing Club is thrilled to announce the addition of the Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong Cup on Good Friday Race Day (7 April) in 2023.

The Club became the first racing Club on the Eastern mainland to introduce Good Friday racing in 2022. The meeting attracted a big crowd and exceptional industry engagement, solidifying the race day’s place on the Canberra racing calendar.

Canberra Racing Club Chief Executive Darren Pearce said, “We are taking Good Friday racing in Canberra to the next level with the introduction of the Tuggeranong Cup.”

“It’s another step forward in our efforts to connect with the Canberra community, welcoming friends from the South to Thoroughbred Park.”

“We want this race day to be something South Canberrans see as their own and are proud of.”

“We are excited to partner with the Canberra Southern Cross Club who are a wonderful contributor to the Canberra community.”

“Canberra Southern Cross Club Woden will host one of our flagship events, the TAB Canberra Cup Calcutta in March.”

The Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong Cup will be a $30,000 Benchmark 65 over 1600m and will highlight what is a great day of racing on Good Friday, the first day of the four-day long weekend.

Brindabella MLA and Shadow Minister for Gaming & Racing Mark Parton is thrilled by the concept and hopes that the Tuggeranong Cup can grow into a highlight on the Canberra event calendar.

“It is wonderful that Tuggeranong and South Canberra community will have a Cup to call its own.”

“The people of our community are proud of where they come from and deserve to be celebrated with this initiative on what is already one of the most well attended race days at Thoroughbred Park throughout the year.”

The Canberra Racing Club will provide shuttle buses from Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong and Woden Clubs on the day. South Canberra businesses who wish to be involved in the day are encouraged to contact the Club.

Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong Venue Manager Jason Lowe-Moon said “The Canberra Southern Cross Club has long supported a wide range of local Canberra sporting Clubs and events.”

“With four of our five venues being Southside, we are excited to be the major sponsor of the inaugural Canberra Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong Cup and we look forward to hosting racegoers before and after the race meeting at our Venues.”
