Racing and Sports Canberra Racing Review - 4 August 2023

Race 1 (1750m) Bm70 - TAB Federal

The day kicked off with a relative upset with SHE’S ALL IN $9.50 winning easily. The 8yo local completely turned the form around over the longer trip and first time on the poly. She was hustled along by the apprentice to lead and was pressed down the back by WICHITA WARRIOR $5.50, before bursting clear again. The mare never looked like stopping in the straight and there was 3L clear at the post from WICHITA WARRIOR. The latter was flat tack trying to stay connected and there was another big gap to the rest. It was a bold ride and a tough effort the winner.

Race 2 (1080m) Mdn SW

INSANE VOLT was bet into $2F and was 2L too good on the line from DEEPHAR $3.20. SASS 'N' CHEEK $9.50 got into third 5.4L from the winner. INSANE VOLT wasn’t hurried early and after the 600m and to be restrained behind horses when keen to quicken. The bold-striding galloper had a wall in front on the turn, but Mallyon cleverly found the splits and despite being wayward came away for an impressive win. DEEPHAR led and held the rail and was pressured from the 850m. She gave plenty and had to be checked around the winner’s heels before the 100m. SASS “N’ CHEEK was wide most of the way and despite being well-beaten, his third placing held some merit. We suggested Insane Bolt was ready to deliver on his potential and he would have taken further learning from the race. One to follow.

Race 3 (1900m) CL1

HEIR JORDAN $2.45 was heavily backed and got the job done easily from the only other fancies, WHO'S IN WINNY $3.40. and DASHING ELGEE $3.50. HEIR JORDAN raced more forward and took the sit behind the leading division, with WHO'S IN WINNY showing the way. She skipped away before the 800m, and HEIR JORDAN led the chase. He was giving the leader 5L on turning but gobbled up the ground to hit the front at the 100m and raced away for an impressive 2.74L victory. DASHING ELGEE headed the rest, 5.6L away at the post. AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN $15 was back and wide out of the straight first time and made a sharp mid-race move to sit on the leader. No surprise he had nothing to give in the straight. HEIR JORDAN looked well-placed and got the job done in style. WHO’S IN WINNY gave everything but had no answer when the winner thundered past.

Race 4 (1750m) Bm55

It was an open betting race, but few expected the rank $71 outsider WHISKEY JACK to get the prize. He was having his third run for the new barn and had been well-beaten the two before at $91 and $151 respectively. He obviously took a shine to the poly surface and held a 1.6L margin on the line over WOULD BE KING $3.1F and LOAFING $5.5, with the latter beaten 3L. It was busy upfront with STREET CRED leading. WHISKY JACK settled midfield in a strung-out field with WOULD BE KING in front of him. LOAFING lobbed along at the back of the field. STREET CRED had put a space on them on turning but was putting in the short ones at the 200m and was run over by the dogged finishers. It turned into a dour struggle with WHISKEY JACK relishing the hot tempo proving the toughest horse on the day.

Race 5 (1280m) Mdn

TENACIOUS LADY on debut ran a clear $2.45F but was well beaten and found to have pulled up with an issue. CES SOIREES LA $4.80 took the race out by 2.8L from SEEYA LATER GATER $20 with a whisker back to PROPHET TIME $4.40 in third. There were plenty wanting the lead and when they settled HEADWHISTLE $51 held the rail and CES SOIREES LA enjoyed a great sit. The former gave a great sight before being swamped at the 100m by the winner who impressed with her finishing effort and was running way at the line. SEEYA LATER GATER made second and it was a commendable effort. Had settled last before making a wide forward move before the turn. He powered home to grab just grab second from stablemate PROPHET TIME who didn’t have the best of it in the straight and finished well. The winner can go on from this.

Race 6 (1280m) Bm65

VAAROOM $7 was ridden along to lead and the favourite FRISSON $1.90 pushed on the sit on his outside after being caught wide. DEVINE MISS $3.4 sat midfield on the rail with She’s BOOMING $14 behind her. VAAROOM had FRISSON beaten at the 200m, but DEVINE MISS kept coming and snatched the win in the shadows of the post. SHE’S BOOMING boxed on well to pip FRISSON in third. The winner was well supported late, and the win was deserved. VAAROOM made good improvement third-up as expected and the bold ride was almost rewarded. FRISSON had to do some work early but was entitled to show more.

Race 7 (1206m) Cl1

The two equal $3.90 favourites CALMER KARMA and MISSILE LEADER fought this out with the former prevailing by 1.5L. The third galloper home NEED FOR GREED $11 was 5.5L from the winner in third. CALMER KARMA was backed in from $5 and was second-up off a 2.7L defeat at Bathurst. He soon established a clear lead while MISSILE LEADER settled rearward three deep from the wide gate.  CAMER KARMA had company from the 800m but was travelling sweetly. MISSLE LEADER made a forward move before the turn and straightened out wide at least 5L from the lead. The winner quickened and was a mile in front at the 200m. The runner-up charged home but couldn’t make up the leeway. The others were well beaten with the best of them boxing on. The first two home are promising and can be followed.
