Trainer Matt Dale Previews His Black Opal Stakes Day Chances

Leading Canberra trainer Matt Dale goes into Sunday’s Mercedes Benz Black Opal meeting with positive expectations about his key runners.

In Race 2 the Canprint Communications BM65 he has the market favourite Hermosa Beach as well as Cries Of Joy — who is on the second line of betting.

“Hermosa Beach has done well since her run in the Country Championship heat,” Dale says.

“Although beaten, I thought her effort was strong and up to her form lines. Back to her home track and with Hugh Bowman on board, I think she will be very hard to beat.

“Cries of Joy is racing well but his execution needs to lift.

“Tommy Berry goes on board again and we have added the ear muffs because the gelding tends to worry about the horses around him.

“I thought he should have won the race at Canberrathe others day, but he tended to concentrate on the horse coming up beside him rather than the job in hand.

“He got the ability, but it is just his execution and we are hoping the rider switch and the gear change will deliver the required improvement.”

In Race 3 the Barlens Camarena Quality Dale is represented by Karakuchi and he says her run in the Country Championship heat was “super”

“The storms came and she had to make a lot of ground in the wrong part of the track.

“She races really well at Canberra and is at her best with Tommy Berry. That being said, however, it is a tough race but she’s a cheeky chance.”

In Race 5 the XXX Gold Canberra Guineas Dale is looking forward to Rinviata competing at a higher level.

“He is a progress type and is improving race-to-race.

“He went up a couple of levels last start and has taken benefit from the two wins — and is going into Sunday a confident horse.

“He is 2/2 the track and these horses on an upward spiral can be very competitive when you step them up again in grade.

“I am looking forward to seeing him at this higher level because I think he is a better chaser and can be competitive.”
