Caprossa impresses in return

Canberra based trained Paul Jones will head to Wagga quietly confidentĀ  next week after his talented mare Caprossa made a winning return at Canterbury on Wednesday.

In what Jones had planned to only be a lead up run towards next week's Wagga Town Plate, Caprossa proved successful in keeping her unbeaten fresh record intact when working home strongly to tackle race leader Master Gaze right in the shadows of the post.

"She's one of my best and I went there with a little bit of improvement left in her and I told Nathan [Berry] that," Jones said.

"I said don't challenge them too early and just save your run for the last couple of 100m and he timed it to a peach.

"She only just got there right on the line and was probably running out of puff at the same time so it was a very well judged ride by Nathan."

Stepping out at just her tenth career start the daughter of Testa Rossa has now claimed six career victories including a close third placing behind yesterday's Listed P J Bell Stakes victor Catkins.

"She got beat second up last preparation to Catkins and if you had followed her since that race she's gone on to win three of her next four starts so the form is very strong," Jones said.

"She's a bonny mare now and this is only her third preparation.

"Her ratings are getting up a bit high now where she will have to come and race in Sydney butĀ  we're heading to the Wagga Plate next week so bring it on."

In-form jockey Nathan Berry took over the reins from twin brother Tommy Berry and said he is looking forward to sticking with the four-year-old in next weeks' Wagga Town Plate.

"She's quite a smart little mare, she showed a bit last preparation and had a couple of unlucky runs there as well," Berry said.

"I was lucky Tommy [Berry] is off to Hong Kong so I got the ride today.

"Her main aim is the Wagga Town Plate so it was a lovely little barrier trial for her.

"It really is a great carnival, I love heading down there and with rides like this it makes it even better."

Jones will be hoping for a change of luck this time around having finished third in the feature sprint in the past two years with stable star Onthelookout.
