Sunday week’s Camarena Quality on John McGrath Auto Group Black Opal Stakes day is likely to be a hotly contested affair.

Highly Geared will be lining up for her third consecutive win in the Camarena. Regardless of whether she wins or not it will be an emotional time for connections following the death of Samara Johnson in a car accident in December, Samara was the partner of trainer Garry Kirkup who was badly injured in the same accident. Samara was the regular track rider of Highly Geared and had an emotional connection with the horse.

Clipper another local horse trained by Matthew Dale will provide stiff opposition for Highly Geared. On Friday 16 February Clipper contested the 55 Second Challenge Heat 12 at Moonee Valley. The race is a series where the fastest heat winner of the 55 Second Challenge Races at Moonee Valley on Friday nights wins a prestige vehicle. Clipper ran second beaten ¾ length in the race time of 55.62 seconds the 4th fastest heat of the 13 heats run so far this season.  Matt Dale said "I am wrapt in her run and she looks very suitable for the Camarena".

The race record for the Camarena Quality is held by Diamond Oasis running 56.96 in 2015 for the 1000 metre race. Rest assured they will be low flying in the Seears Workwear Camarena Quality.
