Canberra Stables Dominate Provincial Championship Final

Canberra justified its place in this year’s Provincial Championships with local stables winning and placing third in the rich Randwick contest.

Phillip Courtney-trained Maryore ($20) came from back in the field to race away with the event providing Courtney with his biggest training success.

The Keith Dryden-Scott Collings-trained Ziganui also came from the back to secure third at even longer odds.

“It’s a big thrill and it’s the biggest day for our stable and the biggest day for the owners,” Courtney said.

“I’ve been training probably about five years now.

“I basically did it as a hobby earlier and it’s basically only the last 12 months that I’ve got into it full time.

“I worked in an office for the defence department, contracting.

“I’ve always been in horses and my family have been in racehorses.”

Maryore won Goulburn Qualifier last month in style and Courtney felt she was up to winning the final but was surprised at the big margin.

He says Maryore is likely to have another run ort two but a decision won’t be made immediately. He said a black-type race would be a target.
