TTM Corporation Group and Thoroughbred Park have developed a partnership through their fantastic support of a race on Melbourne Cup Day and an annual race day to help raise money for the very worthy charity, Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Our next race meeting is “The TTM Corporation Group Cerebral Palsy Charity Race Day”, which will be held on Friday the 13 June. The function will include jazz musicians, Island Dancing, a silent auction with a three-course lunch and beverage package. A fun filled day for all, with Toni Magazine presenting ‘Fashions on the Field’ and beginning the search for the face of TTM Corporation Group.

TTM Corporation Group’s CEO David Mailau, will be presenting the Cerebral Palsy Alliance with a cheque with all funds raised from the day.

The money raised will go towards the new multi-purpose centre being built for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, as well as funding therapy programs, services and specialised equipment for children and their families living with cerebral palsy in the ACT and surrounding regions.

Mr. Mailau says “funds raised will improve the assistance given to parents and provide new facilities and equipment.”

The Race Day is designed to raise awareness, education and support for families living with Cerebral Palsy, while inspiring more people to help support their local charities. Highlighting the much needed support charities need from their local business companies to help people in need.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance ACT is delighted to be a part of such a great event. Tickets are $150pp or a table of 10 for $1500. Hurry bookings close Tuesday 10 June and you can arrange your tickets by calling Kelly at TTM Corporation Group on 6123 1400.

The very sad and sudden passing of Guy Walter was a shock to the racing community. Committee, management and members were represented at the funeral at Warwick Farm with around 2000 other mourners. Guy was a great supporter of the Canberra Racing Club and he will be sadly missed.

The Club has revamped the foyer area of the Ground Floor, Acton Stand into an historical area. Containing old photos, jockey scales, information about racing from the early days in Canberra and also on display are racebooks from the Acton racetrack (now underneath Lake Burley Griffin) as well as member badges. If you have any old badges, or items that you would like to donate to the Club historical area please feel free to hand them in to Donna at the Administration Office or send to PO Box 275, Mitchell ACT 2911.

Course Proper

Following the race meeting on 4 April the Club carried out a major renovation of the inside 10 metres of the course proper and followed up with a renovation of the outside 10 metres after the meeting on for 24 April.

The course proper renovation included a top dressing with a re-cycle top dressing machine, a machine that top dresses the track using the existing soil profile of the track. The renovation also included the insertion of sta-lock stabilising fibres into the sand profile. The purpose of the stabilising fibres is to provide stability to the soil profile and reduce divoting. This process is experimental as to our knowledge it is the first time stabilising fibres have been inserted into an existing track. The 30 May race meeting was abandoned as the track had not recovered sufficiently.

The Club is also experimenting with various types of warm season grasses which have been established in plots and will be monitored through winter and spring to assess and possibly select a warm season grass type that will recover in spring and thrive through our summer and early autumn seasons.

These works have been carried out with a longer term view to ensure the Club has a quality grass racing surface into the future.

Acton Track

The Acton Track was installed in 2004 and the surface was refurbished in 2012. The track surface again requires refurbishing and work on the drainage and base is required. The Committee has been considering the options. A complicating factor is determining the amount that should be spent on the track without first knowing the possible outcomes of the ACT Governments economic feasibility study on co-location or re-location. The Acton Track will not be utilised for racing this winter unless works are carried out relatively quickly which is unlikely at the time of writing. The track is still suitable for track work through management and maintenance practices.
