ACTTAB Melbourne Cup Race Day And Anniversary Celebrations

On 3 November 1962 the Club opened the gates of the new complex at the current site now known as Thoroughbred Park. From an excerpt written by L.Curtis.

“At the start of the new racing season in 1962 the heightened knowledge that the new track and facilities were close to being completed had the racing industry buzzing. The club had had its moments in preparing for the move from its old establishment at Acton but with the waters of Lake Burley Griffin ready to overrun the old course and the surrounding valley, the move to the new premises at Lyneham was eagerly anticipated.

When the day finally arrived for the first meeting on the new track on November 3, there was great excitement both in the racing fraternity and the general public.

Grand old campaigner Crazy Notion proved far too good for his rivals in taking out the feature event. Ridden by Tumut jockey John Heagerty and starting at 4/1, Crazy Notion carried 9 stone 8 lb to victory, following up his strong form on the old Acton course where he had won two Canberra Cups and a Commonwealth Cup. Heagerty had been successful in eight out of nine rides on Crazy Notion at Canberra”.

In 2012 the Club will celebrate 50 years of racing at the current site which has seen many changes over the years. If you have any items of interest to be used in media and historical recordings of racing over the years could you please contact Briony Young, Sales & Marketing Manager on 02 6204 0000 in anticipation of anniversary celebrations to be held later in the year.

The ACTTAB Melbourne Cup Race day is a popular race day attracting large general public attendance. Silks Room is selling quickly for $200 per person all inclusive. The Club’s other hospitality options include Home Straight Shared marquee, Catbird Lane and Corporate options. For more information and bookings please contact the Administration office or visit the website.
