Italy Delivers First Stakes Victory

Godolphin filly Italy had long shown stakes promise and delivered with victory in the Listed XXXX Gold Canberra Guineas on Sunday.

Placed at Group 2 level as a two-year-old, Italy had raced against the top fillies through much of her career but found a race to suit at Thoroughbred Park.

Ridden by Christian Reith, Italy came with a strong run but had to dig deep to see off the previously undefeated Just For Tilda with Bolero King third.

The win came as a relief for the Godolphin team and they will now search for more black type over the Sydney autumn carnival.

"She came back a lot in grade today," said Godolphin assistant trainer Darren Beadman.

"She went through a little flat spot in her racing career but she gained a lot of confidence with her trip to Melbourne."

With regular rider James McDonald unable to make the weight, Reith was given his opportunity and impressed the stable.

"He's riding in great form, Christian, and riding with a lot of confidence," Beadman said.

"He didn't panic when he was three deep and got on to the back of one at the half mile and brought her into the race."

Beadman believes there will be more suitable races for Italy this campaign.

"She's probably a Group 3 kind of filly, maybe Group 2, but I'm sure John will plan out a race for her.

"Maybe something over The Championships, a nice little Listed race in fillies grade."

Reith was impressed with the filly's effort and believes there is more improvement to come.

"We decided to ride her a little bit softer today," Reith said.

"She let down really explosively, she just ran it out but she'll definitely improve on it."
