Highway Decision Deferred For At Least Three Months

Racing NSW has deferred for at least three months a decision on whether Canberra trainers maintain their “country” status.

This follows a meeting between the Canberra Racing Club and Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys and chairman Russell Balding.

Peter V’landys says the meeting was “productive” and that the club had “put forward a concise presentation”.

He said Racing NSW had agreed to defer any decision for “at least three months” to give the Racing NSW Board time to consider the club’s presentation.

If Canberra was to be reclassified from country to provincial, horses trained in the capital would no longer be able to compete in Sydney Highway Handicap races.
