Canberra stables tackle rich Country Classic

Canberra will have strong representation in Saturday’s $125,000 The Country Classic at Rosehill over 2000m

The Barbara Joseph- Paul and Matt Jones -trained gelding D’BEAK placed third in the feature last year and should be cherry ripe third up in his preparation to build on that effort.

He draws low and the 3kg apprentice Rebeka Prest in the saddle.

Garry Kirkup will present LA BIERE CHOISIE in the Classic seeking a hat-trick off clear-cut Albury wins at 1500m, finishing the races off strongly.

Kirkup was formerly trained by Kris Lees at Newcastle and has been with Kirkup for four starts.

“She’s just turned four and has improved with maturity,” Kirkup said.  “She ran a close second over 2000m when Kris had her, and she gives every impression she will run it right out on Saturday.

“She will present in great order and while up in grade we believe she deserves her chance.”

Matt Cahill comes to ride.

Matt Dale will have two runners engaged and both bring strong form to the event.

RAPTURE MISS was just beaten at her last start, over 1800m on the Randwick-Kensington and the winner — Miss Shanti — has since confirmed that form placing behind Sky Boy at Rosehill.

The 2000m looks an ideal progression for the Smart Missile mare, with Kerrin McEvoy riding.

SHANGANI PATROL brings strong city staying form to the race including a win at Warwick Farm and a lip defeat the same venue. Tommy Berry is booked.

The TAB Highway Handicap on the same day also holds Canberra interest with the Nick Olive-trained DREAMING OF BISCAY and Team Joseph’s TYRES ARE CRUCIAL both competing off tough last start wins.
