CANBERRA RACING CLUB LAUNCHES TWO DAY CARNIVAL FROM 2020

The Canberra Racing Club is delighted to announce the introduction of a two-day Carnival from 2020 over the

Canberra Day long weekend in March.

The Carnival will feature Black Opal Stakes Day on Sunday 8 March 2020 followed by Canberra Cup Day on

the Canberra Day public holiday, Monday 9 March 2020.

The Canberra Carnival will complement the many events in Canberra over the long weekend as visitors

are drawn to the Capital to experience Canberra and the Enlighten Festival. The Canberra Racing Club

looks forward to working with Visit Canberra and the ACT Government to provide an additional draw card to

promote Tourism to the ACT.

Canberra Racing Club Chairman Mr Ian Mackay said “We are already a major driver of tourist visitation to the

Capital and this will grow significantly with the introduction of a two-day Carnival from 2020. Attracting the

best possible horses to our feature races along with providing a great day of entertainment is more important

than ever in the very competitive landscape we are in”.

The Carnival will have a unique feel to the two days. Canberra Racing Club CEO Mr Andrew Clark said

“We are focussed on providing race goers with a distinct and special experience across the two days.

Black Opal Stakes day will remain as the Clubs key race day with four feature races headlined by the

John McGrath Auto Group Black Opal Stakes.

Canberra Cup Day, featuring the TAB Canberra Cup will also include the XXXX Gold Canberra Guineas and a

new race, the ‘Lickety Split’ over 1000m, tempting the fastest maiden horses in the region to compete.

The day will be focussed on a relaxed day of Carnival racing encouraging local families to stay in Canberra for

the long weekend and visitors from interstate to stay an extra night in Canberra”.

Racing in the Capital will also be boosted by a new initiative of Preview Day on Friday 21 February 2020.

This day features the running of a new race, the $150,000 Canberra Mile. First and second placegetters in the

Canberra Mile will receive ballot exemption into the TAB Canberra Cup, whilst ballot exemption will also be

offered to the first and second placegetters for the three Preview races on the day – the Black Opal Preview,

the National Sprint Preview and the Canberra Guineas Preview. The Club sees this initiative as helping our

local Owners and Trainers snare a guaranteed start in the big races over the new two-day Carnival.
