Canberra Premiership Showdown

With just one Canberra meeting remaining in the 2016-17 racing season, the ACT Trainer and Jockey Premierships will go down to the wire.

It was a day of doubles and trebles for leading contenders for both awards at Friday’s meeting.  The new Acton surface again performed outstandingly giving every horse a chance and providing tip-top racing.

Trainer Nick Olive continued his late season burst with three winners and now tops the Trainers Premiership with 24 wins, one ahead of season front runner Keith Dryden/Scott Collings who managed one win on the day.

The Barbara Joseph/Paul Jones yard scored a double lifting them to fourth on the table (12), one win behind Matt Dale (13).

Brendon Ward and Mathew Cahill are neck and neck in the Jockey Premiership with 19 wins apiece, five ahead of Jeff Penza (14).

Penza rode a double — both for Kick Olive — and Ward booted home Stromlo for Dryden/Collings.

The final Canberra meeting for the 2016-17 racing season will be held on the Acton on Friday 28 July with both premierships well and truly on the line.
