New Date for Mercedes-Benz Black Opal Stakes

A reminder to members that the Mercedes-Benz Black Opal Stakes on 6 March 2016 is not on the Canberra Day long weekend next year.

The reason is due to the introduction of the Championships in Sydney and where Easter falls there has been a reshuffle of dates and the Golden Slipper Stakes in Sydney is on Saturday 19 March 2016. If the Club were to retain the Canberra Day long weekend date the Black Opal would be 6 days prior to the Golden Slipper and would not be a suitable lead up to the Golden Slipper. Committee took the decision that at Group 3 level following an upgrade in 2015 and at $275,000 we should attempt to build on the Black Opal as a genuine lead up to the Golden Slipper and run the Black Opal Stakes 2 weeks prior to the Golden Slipper as it was in 2015.

It also provides the opportunity to test the theory that attendances may improve if the Black Opal was not on the Canberra Day long weekend when a percentage of Canberran's leave Canberra for the long weekend.

Polo Launch

On Wednesday 16 December Andrew Williams of Willo Polo and the Canberra Racing Club announced polo clinics and match days to be held from February to May 2016. Polo is an exciting sport and the Club views this opportunity as an extension of equine activities as well as an opportunity to diversify and make use of the unused land in the centre of the course.

The clinics will be open to all ages. Bookings for the clinics can be completed online by going to www.willopolo.com.au or contact the Club. A fantastic Christmas gift idea for the horse lover!

Disabled Parking Arrangements

The Club will introduce a new procedure for the management of parking for members with disabled parking permits.

The current arrangements are six disabled parking spaces along the paid reserved parking area which is accessed by the main gate and enough space to accommodate all other disabled parking requirements in the area of the jockey's car park.

With the practice of both disabled members and jockeys entering via the main gate is has become very difficult to manage with the apparent increase in number of members with disabled passes.

As a consequence the Club has reviewed the arrangements for disabled car parking and for jockeys and new arrangements will be introduced from the race meeting of 29 December and will apply for all race meetings except for Melbourne Cup day and Black Opal Stakes day when the pedestrian entrance will be via the main entrance.

A dedicated parking area for members for members with a disabled pass has been created reasonably close to the grandstand building to accommodate the parking requirements for all disabled members.

To access the new member disabled parking area please enter the racecourse via Gate 2 which is the second gate from the Flemington Road end of Randwick Road and make your way to the members car park entrance. Then drive straight ahead to the jockeys and disabled membersparking area where you will be directed by the gate attendant.

This arrangement has been introduced for the overall benefit of the majority of members whohold a disabled parking pass.
