Black Opal Stakes Winner wins Rosehill Group 1

The reputation of Canberra’s Group 3 Black Opal Stakes has been further enhanced with Trapeze Artist’s win in Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill.

Trapeze Artist sat wide from the outside gate to wallop his rivals with the blinkers applied again.

Trainer Gerald Ryan said: “I put blinkers on him third-up in the Black Opal and he peaked that day and I kept telling the owners he is only being aimed at one race and one race only — the Golden Rose.” Ryan said.

“I have been saying for two weeks this horse has been flying under the radar, but because of the path I have taken with this colt people just forgot about him.’’

Trapeze Artist was a three lengths winner of the 2017 Group 3 Black Opal Stakes and joins Epaulette, Takedown Target and Criterion as Group 1 winners that have come out of the race.

It’s another fillip for the capital’s premier race and for Canberra racing in general, with star performers Single Gaze and Fell Swoop flying the Canberra flag in big spring features.
